Not only is swimming an activity that virtually everyone can do, but it can greatly improve your health in numerous ways.

Why Should You Swim?

Swimming has numerous benefits for just about everyone. Here are just a few reasons why swimming should become your go-to workout.

  • It’s a workout that tones and works your entire body.

When you swim it engages virtually every aspect of your body. Your arms, legs, and abs all get a workout, but the workout doesn’t stop there. It also helps your heart and lungs.

  • Leads to Improvement in Almost Everything

Because you work your whole body when you swim, swimming improves coordination, balance, posture, flexibility, endurance, and energy levels.

  • Lose Weight Fast

One of the most obvious benefits of swimming is that it helps you lose weight. A mild swim can burn 200 calories in 30 minutes. Few other workouts have those kinds of results. But you don’t have to stop at 200 calories, the more you increase your speed and form, the more calories you will burn.

  • Reduce Stress

Swimming increases your heart rate, which automatically reduces your stress levels. It has also been known to help you sleep better and reduce anxiety and depression.

  • It Feels Good

Swimming is one of the only workouts that burn calories fast, is low impact, and keeps you cool. Because swimming is low-impact, people of all ages can participate in it, and it can even be used as therapy for some injuries. It is also a great way to stay in shape when you have injuries like sprains. However, you should consult your physician before attempting to swim with an injury.

How to Get Started?

Now that you know all the amazing benefits you can gain from swimming regularly, let’s look at how you can get started.

While you don’t need a lot to start swimming, there are some items we recommend buying before starting your swimming workout.

Swim goggles are extremely helpful in the pool, and you should also keep a water bottle with you whenever you swim. Once you have these things, you need to choose a safe environment to swim in.

While you can swim in rivers, lakes, and seas. You need to make sure that you aren’t swimming near dangerous animals and that there is someone nearby in case you need them. You also want to be aware of springs and currents that may be in the body of water you swim in.

An easy way to avoid these problems is to swim in a public pool that has the supervision of a lifeguard.

When you have your swimming essentials and know where you want to swim, there’s something you need to do before jumping in the water: stretch and warm-up. This is the best way to avoid cramping and get the best workout. After this, you can start your workout.

The ideal swim workout is around 30 to 45 minutes long, but pace yourself and listen to your body. The last thing you want to do is injure yourself because you were overdoing your workout.

How to Track Your Swim Workout

When you begin swimming or if you’ve been swimming a while, you may benefit from tracking your swimming. Tracking your swimming can help you see the benefits of swimming in your own life and can help you improve your health and speed.

Swim trackers come in a variety of forms. The three most popular ways to track swimming are with a swim journal, a swim sheet filled out by someone else, and a fitness tracker.

A Swim journal is the most traditional swim tracker. To start a swim journal all you need is a notebook. In this notebook, you should write down the time and date, your heart rate before and after your workout, what swim stroke you performed, and how you felt during the workout. All of this can be done in a few minutes.

If you have a friend or swim coach, they can help you keep your swim journal as well, or they can provide you with sheets of paper that track the same things. These swim sheets may also include how many laps you completed and your time for those laps.

If you don’t want to take the time to write out your swim stats, but don’t have a friend or coach who will write them down for you downloading a fitness tracker is an easy way to track your swimming workout.

If you want to use a digital swim tracker, you need to buy a waterproof or swim-friendly smartwatch with GPS abilities. These watches and swim tracking apps keep track of the type of strokes you performed, your pace, number of laps, number of reps, and yardage.

Most swim tracker apps are easy to use. All you have to do is choose your stroke on the app, and start your watch when you start working out. These fitness tracking smartwatches can be paused in between sets and provide more accurate information on your swim workout.

How to Improve Your Speed

If you have been tracking your swimming workout for a while, you may decide you want to improve your speed. This can be done in two major ways: reduce drag and improve propulsion.

To reduce drag you can try wearing swim caps over your hair, try swimming taller, and improve your balance. If you’ve already done all of this you can improve your propulsion by improving your kicks (your kicks should not break the surface, but they shouldn’t be deeply immersed in the water either), improve your arm stroke techniques, and slightly spreading your fingers to create an invisible web in between your fingers.

Swimming is an effective, easy, and low-impact workout. This makes it the perfect workout for virtually anyone regardless of age and physical condition.

It comes with multiple benefits, can be easily tracked, and is easy to improve. If you’d like to learn more about swimming or swimming products, check out more of our post on swimming.
